A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb an American Slave Written by Himself Henry Bibb 9781161444438 Books

I have read a number of slave autobiographies and this was by far the best. Somehow the visceral feel of this state was made so clear in this book. Having every indignity of physical, emotional and sexual nature put one or watching this done to others without being able to lift a finger in defense...to not even be able to look rhe master in the eye. How can anyone survive 500 lashes and this by a respected deacon of the church. Henry Bibb was a master at running away successfully but then he chose to come back to rescue his wife and daughter only to be captured again. This happened repeatedly and his adventures both before and after were fascinating and horrific. I think the saddest part for a moral, upright individual was being denied the right to spiritual instruction or attending church. He could not marry his wife in any regular way and because they were both considered property like a horse or cow, could be split up at will. All the rigors and pain of slavery are elucidated in great detail which was lacking in many of the other books. What strength of character and will to go through what the author did and survive. He told the tale for millions.

A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb an American Slave Written by Himself Henry Bibb 9781161444438 Books Reviews

I have read many slaves' narratives for research, and I found Henry Bibb's book to be uniquely clear, insightful and forthright.
This book touches on many points not found in other slave narratives; it is beautifully composed by the author and at times hard to read for its emotional content. All people who want to read more on this topic or better comprehend U.S. history should read this narrative.
Very interesting first-hand account of life as a slave. Henry Bibb was no ordinary slave. He was a very determined and brave man during a time when possessing these traits usually cost a slave their life. The book also illustrates the kindness of some whites during an unfortunate time in U.S. history.
This is an honest and beautiful narrative of an American slave. At times I teared up, other times in awe of his persistence and prevailing nature.
Good Book!!
As a history major, I thoroughly enjoyed this work! Insightful, intriguing , and a great read. The story places you there, however unpleasant and shows just how resourceful slaves had to be to survive and live under deplorable conditions and treatment. A read "must read"
Henry Bibb was a slave in the first half of the 1800s who, although without formal education, was an extremely intelligent man. He was also a very God-fearing man, who would do nothing against his conscience and beliefs. In this autobiography, Bibb describes his life as a slave the cruelty, the lashings, the riches gained by the slaveowners at the expense of other human beings.

Bibb had a remarkable ability to escape, and he did so at numerous times. Although he was able to reach Canada, he was once kidnapped by black fugitive hunters and taken back to the South. At that time, known for his ability to escape, he was offered a job as a fugitive slave hunter but refused, preferring to be taken back to the South rather than disobey his conscience.

He at least three times went back to the South after escaping to try to rescue his wife and child. He was once turned in by a small black girl. Another time, he was exposed by other slaves who received rewards for turning him in. On one occasion, some blacklegs who he had been sold to tried to buy Bibb's wife and child for him, but Bibb's former slaveowner was so angry that Bibb had escaped that he would not sell the pair. Not only that, but this well-respected Deacon of the Methodist Church, whipped Bibb's wife mercilessly as she clung to her husband, crying to be with him.

This story should be on the must-read list at every school. It exposes slavery for what it really was and shows clearly through this man's excellent writing that slaves were not stupid, lesser creatures but human beings -- and sometimes brilliant human beings like Bibb. Bibb would shame many of us because of his single-minded devotion to his beliefs and unwillingness to do anything he regarded as wrong.
