This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Outdoor Handy Book Daniel Carter Beard Books

This deserves 5 stars because it is what it is.

However, if you think (like I did) that it was an instructional guide on building structures (swings, slides, clubhouse, etc) be forewarned that it is not.

With that said, it is by a good author and is worth adding to the collection. It is filled with many ideas for outdoor activities and games. It stands as a glance into an era of time before fast food and video games. A simpler time, when children where actually outdoors, as opposed to couch potatoes growing increasingly overweight doing nothing more than eating fast food and playing video games.

But this book for your own curiosity or better yet, for that child who complains "there's nothing do" (other than tv and video games and computers) and send them outside Untill dark. The same way we grew up.

The Outdoor Handy Book Daniel Carter Beard Books Reviews

This book gives boys lot's of ideas and info on things like building a raft, using and making a blowgun, skinning an eel, rules for mumbly peg with a pocket knife, instructions for every marbles game ever created, how to make a bating suit, ect, ect. . Priceless look at what boys used to do before video games and television. Originally published in 1896 as "The American Boys Book of Sport" This is the revised and updated 1930 version retitled to "The Outdoor Handy Book" This book is priceless and is a fascinating look at how things used to be.
It had nearly nothing on forest and had everything on playground. It was not fun to read expecting Forrest related things...
"Uncle"Dan was a prolific woodcraft writer around the turn of the 20th century. He founded the Boy Pioneers and the Sons of Daniel Boone, which in turn helped form the BSA. Many of his books are bargains. I spent 4 mos in the woods and used them as a guide.
Dan Beard is one of my personal heroes and one of the founding members of the Boy Scouts of America (with Thomas Earnest Seaton and William Boyce.) I have made a point of picking up anything that shows up that he has written. And wish I had been born back in the time that his books were more relevant. Parents these days wouldn't allow their off springs to have as much fun as ol' Dan could cook up. All kinds of games and projects by season, and one of my personal favorites; knife throwing as a game with rules and requirements.
